3. 15th International Conference on Climate Change: Impacts & Responses

“The climate emergency is now so urgent that for those who understand its seriousness, it can occupy the central place in decision-making. Innovation takes time and it seems apparent that we have a narrow window to address multiple issues simultaneously — we also can’t afford to make other issues worse while we deal with a different one. While we need many diverse place-based initiatives, the urgency suggests we need to identify those that can be scaled quickly across places. Hence, this year’s conference will focus specifically on scalable solutions that heal and protect both the climatic system and nature.”

Where: Vancouver, Canada and virtual

When: 20 and 21 April 2023

News, Insights & Key Stories

  1. How non-profits can use business as a force for good by The Conversation

How can non-profit organizations use business strategies to achieve their social and environmental goals? The idea is to adopt a “hybrid” approach that combines the best practices of both the non-profit and for-profit sectors, allowing non-profits to generate revenue while also fulfilling their mission.

The article cites several examples of non-profits successfully using business strategies, such as fair trade organizations that sell products produced by marginalized communities and reinvest profits back into those communities. The article also discusses the benefits of adopting a hybrid approach, such as increased sustainability, scalability, and impact.

2. Two Keys to Sustainable Social Enterprise by Sally R. Osberg and Roger L. Martin at Harvard Business Review

There are two key elements that are critical for the success and sustainability of social enterprises. Firstly, social enterprises need to have a clear and compelling mission that is well-aligned with their business model. This involves defining the social or environmental problem they are trying to address, and ensuring that their products or services are relevant to the target population.

The second key element is a strong and competent team, which is crucial for both executing the business strategy and staying true to the organization’s mission. The article emphasizes the importance of recruiting and retaining talented and committed individuals who share the organization’s values and vision.

The article also discusses some common challenges faced by social enterprises, such as the need for ongoing funding and the difficulty of measuring impact. It suggests that a strong mission and team can help overcome these challenges, as they provide a solid foundation for building relationships with stakeholders and demonstrating the organization’s value and impact.
